Reminiscing The Carlton
I could write about every corner of the Carlton Cannes. Equally, I could happily reside in any corner of this Regent Hotel. Ask me to choose just one, I would hesitate.
Yet, amongst the many scenes that reel through the cinematic experience the Carlton journeys it’s guest through, I come back to a moment at the Riviera Restaurant. A day-to-evening, breakfast-to-fine-dining restaurant, plush with marble interiors that sweep onto a terrace fashioned on an epitome of the 1950s Riviera. It overlooks the azure waters, the pedestrian flit of La Croisette and it’s palms, and the revolving doors of the Carlton itself as coloured supercars slide in between the comers and goers of the most popular destination on the Boulevard.
I’m waiting for my family to join me for dinner, and had vied to catch the rich August sunset colours as they contrast a backdrop to the white and yellow striped pastels of the restaurant’s canopies.
A young man with a beautiful, rounded accent seats me at my table and accompanies me in conversation as I wait. Later that evening I appreciate this as a gentle gesture, when we hear in passing that the staff can manage 300-500 covers an evening; of course you would never feel it. Roberto and I, establishing what brings us both to this time and place, quite quickly land on our joint love for the French Riviera. “I’ve wanted to work here since I was a little boy.” The words deeply strike me, as I too, growing up spending family summers in the region, felt an age-old draw that would one day bring me as guest
to the Carlton Cannes, wondering how possibly to remain. I asked him where he was from, imagining where he would return to as a little boy, with those dreams of coming back to the Carlton. He simply said: “From here. Cannes.”
In that moment I understood the Carlton. You could be on her doorstep, call her your neighbour, or yourself her townsfolk, day in day out. You could, in one way or another, see her every day. Even then, like the young girl looking forward to seeing her on summer trips across the Channel, you would yearn to grow up and find proximity to the Carlton; a way to reside within her walls. That is the Carlton Regent.
